Ask an adult what freedom means, and you might get a long answer about history, rights, or independence.

Ask a child the same question, and the answer could be completely different.

It might be playing outside with friends. Going to school. Choosing what to draw. Spending time with family. Having a clean park to play in. Becoming a doctor, artist, sportsperson, scientist—or simply being allowed to dream as big as they want.

That's what makes this Independence Day interesting. Instead of telling children what freedom means, why not ask them?

Give them a blank sheet of paper and ask:

“What does freedom mean to you?”

Don't give them an example first. Let them think about it.

One child might draw the Indian flag flying high. Another might draw children going to school. Someone else might imagine a future India with green cities, clean rivers, flying cars, or children exploring space.

There is no right or wrong answer.

The beauty of children's art is that they often express big ideas in surprisingly simple ways. A few colours and shapes can tell us what they care about, what they hope for, and how they see the world around them.

And the answer doesn't have to be a drawing.

A child could make a tricolour craft, write a poem, create a dance, sing a song, or make a small performance about what freedom means to them. Every form of expression can tell a story.

This Independence Day, try something different at home. Put away the ready-made templates for a while and give your child the freedom to create their own idea of freedom.
