Christian writing does not remain such if it acknowledges no will to witness. Yet that intention has to renounce all arrogance and know itself for what it is—being in trust with the Self expending love of God in its "On behalfness" in relation to creation, grace, fellowship, and peace. In a world yearning for human community under the constraints of growing population, technological change, and tragic economic disequilibrium, it is urgent that religions renounce the agelong will to contend, to divide, and to alienate. The religions are all surely required to show cause for their separateness, to offer to the world that which by its distinctiveness warrants their continuing separate identity. The Christian identifies that distinctively Christian meaning in divine kenosis, in a transcendent compassion which retrieves the tragic in history by the vicarious love which, through Jesus crucified, is "the place of the Name" whereby we must be saved.
